Dressing in layers is a great way to add visual interest to your photograph. Consider a shirt and vest or dress with a sweater. Layers can help to add depth and texture to your portrait.
It allows you to worry less about putting together complicated outfits and have more fun creating unforgettable memories. Here are a few tips that I hope will help guide you along the way of choosing the perfect outfit for a family photo session. This is the age to wear colorful frocks, summer dresses, and maxis. Wearing frocks is my favorite part of being a young girl.
Holiday Traditions
Conventional wisdom says that patterns do not go well with plain colours but as long as they do not clash it should be OK. When you choose a colour though, you don’t really need to dress kids with that colour from head to toe. The best thing to do is to use the colours as accents. Just sprinkle those colours throughout the kids’ outfit.
Select outfits that will make for a timeless portrait. If all else fails, when you look in your closet to find the perfect family portrait outfits think about staying classic. Styles come and go but, your photos are forever. Lay each family member’s outfit together while planning. This way you’ll have a good idea about how the pieces will look next to each other. This will allow you a better idea of what works and what doesn’t.
Fun Outfit Ideas for Family Pictures This Fall
A frustrated child in a photoshoot is something that you will not like even more. You’d rather have a child that is running and jumping. You can also capture that energy in the photoshoot.
When we think of little girls, we imaging ponytails and frocks, and that basically sums up their entire childhood. Two ponytails on the side make little girls look like angels. And the best part is that smaller the hair, cuter the pigtails look. Imagine glasses with pigtails, aww my heart is melting. You can add a dainty hairband on top to make this hairstyle look even better.
Summer outfits
The best thing that you can do is to pick a basic colour palette and then start from there. You can never go wrong with clothes that have a neutral colour. Clothes with different shades of the same colour palette also work. You should also know that soft tones look good together. Do not be afraid to break the rules unless you want to have a boring photo shoot.

Add a pair of statement shoes to an otherwise simple outfit for a more stand-out look. There’s nothing wrong with a white shirt and jeans. Hats are the perfect accessory to frame your child’s face and complete their look. Some hats you could use include beret’s, straw hats, wide brimmed, felt hats, beanies and caps. Don’t be afraid to dress your child in something a little more classy and sophisticated. Achieve this look with a coat and boots combination.
French Style
I loved how my pink shirt wasn’t too distracting with the fall leaves. We don’t always have someone available to help us with pictures, but the times we have always go much smoother. Take advantage of light cotton, pretty sheers and lace. Light and breezy outfits are also great for the summer heat.

If your kids really love dressing up and their Halloween costume still fits, why not get another use out of it? If they really love their costume, it’ll make for a super fun and unique photo (and a great trend if they’re down to wear a costume every year). You’ll look back on these pictures for years — so here are some cute and funny options you and your kids will love. You can do a little DIY project with your daughter and make cute headbands for her school days. Custom make these with most of the dresses so that it looks like a complete outfit. You can use leftover cloth for this project rather than buying supplies.
Make sure that everyone is comfortable with their clothing to ensure all smiles. If you are blessed with a big family, it can get quite overwhelming to choose the perfect outfit for every member. In most cases, we just don’t know where to start. Simply start by selecting a great outfit for the mom, and work backward to select dad’s and kid’s outfits in colors that complement. If you don’t have a lot of time or simply prefer a more casual style, jeans and comfy shirts work beautifully. This casual approach is, in fact, more natural and candid.
Dressing your kid according to the latest trends is fun. You should go in for a photo shoot that would look good even after your kid becomes an adult. Your best bet is always to go for the timeless classic look. Clothes with classic shapes and neutral colours that are vintage in look do not seem to go out of style. If kids are not comfortable with the clothes, they are wearing it will show on their faces. And you do not want that to be captured in pictures.
I swear, I always planned on sending the kids to school on picture day wearing something stylish and presentable. But, something always came up at the last minute that got in the way. Another helpful item to consider when trying to decide what to wear in your family photos is the location of your photoshoot. Are you going to be on the beach where there are plenty of neutral tones or under a tree surrounded by bright fall foliage? Select a color palette for your outfits that will complement the setting. Pick out items of clothing in colors that will complement your background and not compete with it.
Instead of digging through everyone’s closet to find coordinating clothes, consider buying something that matches. There are plenty of other reasons to buy matching Halloween t-shirts, from creating good memories together to easily finding your kids in a crowd. The next set of summer family photos was a nautical-inspired photoshoot done by Christine Olsen at the Provo Marina by the Utah Lake. This is an important item to keep in mind for every family member but, especially when you are thinking about what to dress your little ones in. If your kids are not comfortable then you’re going to be in for a long photoshoot. Don’t make it more difficult on yourself or your photographer to get the perfect shot.
